What should you know about kt kinesiology tape?

Short answer
KT kinesiology tape is an elastic adhesive tape that may provide sensory feedback and short-term support, but it does not diagnose or cure an injury.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What kinesiology tape is
Kinesiology tape stretches with movement and is placed on the skin over or near a painful or weak area. Contact with the skin can change how movement feels and may remind you to use a different position. It is different from rigid athletic tape, which is designed to limit movement more firmly.
Tape cannot stabilise every joint, repair a torn structure, or identify why pain started. Its value depends on the problem, application, skin response, and the rest of the rehabilitation plan. A clinician may use it as one part of exercise, education, and activity modification.
Using it thoughtfully
Ask a physiotherapist to choose the application and show you how much tension to use. Apply it to clean, dry, intact skin, and avoid recently shaved or irritated areas. Smooth the edges, keep it away from open wounds, and remove it slowly if the skin becomes uncomfortable.
Stop using tape for itching, burning, rash, blistering, numbness, or increased pain. Read about [Kinesiology Tape](/materials/kinesiology-tape/) and clinician-led [Kinesiology Taping](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/kinesiology-taping/) to understand how it may fit within rehabilitation. Continue the exercises and load changes recommended for your condition.
When to seek care
Do not use tape to mask symptoms that are rapidly worsening or unexplained. Arrange medical assessment for marked swelling, a new deformity, persistent night pain, loss of strength or sensation, or pain after a significant injury. Seek urgent help for a cold or pale limb, severe weakness, or inability to use the limb.
Questions for your doctor
What is the tape intended to change in my movement or symptoms? How long should I wear it, and how should I remove it? Which exercises or activity changes matter more than the tape? What finding would mean I need a different assessment?

Questions people ask
Is kinesiology tape the same as a brace?
No. Kinesiology tape is elastic and usually allows movement; a brace may provide more structured support depending on its design.
Can I apply it over broken skin?
No. Use it only on clean, intact skin unless a qualified clinician gives specific wound-care advice.
