What should you know about KP skin bumps?

Keratosis pilaris often feels like fine sandpaper and may appear on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. The bumps can be skin-coloured, pink, or darker than the surrounding skin. They are different from pus-filled spots, sudden hives, or a single growing lesion. Similar-looking changes can occur with folliculitis, heat rash, milia, or lichen planus, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Use a mild cleanser, lukewarm water, and a fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing. A clinician may suggest a product containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid, introduced gradually because irritation can make redness more noticeable. Avoid picking, harsh scrubs, and vigorous shaving over the bumps. If itching is prominent, ask whether Antihistamine Treatment is appropriate; a persistent individual lesion may need a different assessment, such as Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal).

Arrange a dermatology review if the bumps become painful, warm, rapidly swollen, crusted, or filled with pus, or if they spread quickly. Seek prompt care for facial or eye swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread blistering rash. A review is also useful when the diagnosis is uncertain or home care has caused burning or marked peeling.
