What should you know about kombucha food poisoning?

Foodborne illness after kombucha may involve nausea, vomiting, loose stools, abdominal cramps, or fever. Fermentation does not remove every possible hazard, especially when preparation, storage, acidity, or hygiene is unsuitable. Symptoms can overlap with other infections, medication effects, or food intolerance, so the drink alone cannot establish the cause.

The main concern during repeated vomiting or diarrhoea is loss of fluid and salts. People who are older, pregnant, immunocompromised, or living with significant medical conditions may need advice sooner because dehydration can develop more quickly.

Stop drinking the suspected batch and keep its container or label if medical advice is needed. Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution; small amounts may be easier to keep down than a large drink. Rest, eat light foods when tolerated, and avoid alcohol. Do not prepare drinks for other people while you have vomiting or diarrhoea, and wash your hands carefully after using the bathroom.

Seek urgent care for inability to keep fluids down, faintness, confusion, very little urine, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or breathing difficulty. Contact a clinician for persistent fever, worsening symptoms, or diarrhoea that is not settling. Intravenous fluids may be considered when dehydration is significant or oral fluids cannot be kept down.

Tell the clinician when you drank the kombucha, how it was stored, who else drank it, and when symptoms began. Ask whether you need an examination, testing, or an oral rehydration plan, and which medicines are suitable for your symptoms.
