Kokoso for cradle cap: what to know

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, can cause greasy or dry yellowish scales on a baby's scalp. It is usually not caused by poor hygiene and may not bother the baby. A coconut-based emollient such as Kokoso can loosen scale so it is easier to wash away, but it does not necessarily address ongoing inflammation or yeast-related contribution.

The product's ingredients and fragrance matter. A baby may react to botanical ingredients, preservatives, or essential oils, and oily products left on the scalp can collect more scale. Do not pick, scrape, or pull attached flakes, since that can injure the skin and invite infection.

Use a small amount only if the product is intended for infant skin, keep it away from the eyes and mouth, and follow the label. Massage very lightly, allow the scale to soften, then wash the scalp with a mild baby cleanser and soft brush or cloth. The scale should lift gradually; stop if the skin becomes red or sore.

Wash your hands before care and avoid sharing scalp brushes. If simple measures are not enough, a clinician may recommend emollient therapy or topical antifungal treatment based on the baby's examination. Do not apply adult medicated creams without advice.

Contact a clinician if the scalp is weeping, bleeding, swollen, cracked, foul-smelling, or covered with pus, or if the baby seems unwell. Arrange an assessment when the rash spreads beyond the scalp, becomes very itchy, affects feeding or sleep, or does not improve with gentle care. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, widespread hives, or breathing difficulty after a product.
