Kojic acid uses for the face
Short answer
Kojic acid is a pigment-targeting ingredient that may gradually soften facial dark marks while careful use helps limit irritation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What kojic acid does on facial skin
Kojic acid reduces the activity involved in making melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. On the face, it is commonly considered for post-blemish marks, sun-related discolouration, and other areas that look darker than the surrounding skin. It does not identify why a mark appeared, and it cannot treat every cause of facial colour change.
Facial skin can react to concentrated or frequently applied products with stinging, redness, dryness, or peeling. Irritation may make uneven pigmentation look more noticeable, especially in skin that tends to darken after inflammation.
Using it with a gentle routine
Check the product directions and begin on a small area before applying it more widely. Use a thin layer on clean, dry skin, keep it away from the eyes and broken skin, and avoid adding several strong exfoliating or retinoid products at the same time unless a clinician has advised you to do so.
A bland moisturiser can reduce dryness. Broad-spectrum sunscreen and shade help prevent ultraviolet exposure from reinforcing facial pigmentation. If you want a clinician-led option, a [Skin Brightening Treatment](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/skin-brightening-treatment/) may be discussed after the cause and sensitivity of the marks are assessed. See the ingredient overview for [Kojic Acid](/materials/kojic-acid/).
When facial marks need assessment
Arrange a skin assessment for a mark that is new and changing, bleeding, persistently crusted, painful, or unlike the other marks on your face. Seek advice if burning, swelling, blistering, or a spreading rash follows application. A clinician can also check whether the colour change fits acne-related pigmentation, melasma, infection, or another condition before recommending treatment.
Questions for your doctor
What is the likely cause of my facial pigmentation, and is kojic acid suitable for my skin sensitivity? Which products should I pause while introducing it? What should I do if the area becomes darker or irritated?

No. The result depends on the cause of the pigmentation, and some marks need a clinical diagnosis or a different treatment.
