What should you know about kojic acid shower gel?

A shower gel is applied briefly and washed away, unlike a leave-on cream. Its cleansing base, fragrance and other ingredients may affect comfort, especially on dry, shaved or eczema-prone skin. Read the label for the intended body area and avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes.

Kojic acid is included in some products for the appearance of uneven body tone. It does not explain why a patch developed, and friction, inflammation or an untreated skin condition may continue to cause colour change.

Use a small amount on wet skin, cleanse gently and rinse thoroughly according to the label. Do not scrub hard or leave the gel on longer than directed. Moisturise after bathing, particularly if your skin feels tight, and be cautious after shaving or hair removal.

Keep the gel away from broken skin and eyes. Avoid adding several exfoliating products to the same area while you are learning how your skin responds. Cover exposed areas or use sunscreen, since sunlight can reinforce uneven pigmentation.

Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives or blistering. Stop the gel and seek advice if burning, cracking, swelling or a rash persists after rinsing. A spot that changes, bleeds or crusts needs examination rather than repeated washing.

Ask whether a rinse-off kojic acid product is appropriate for the affected body area, whether shaving or eczema is contributing to the colour change, and which moisturiser or leave-on treatment would be safer for your skin.
