Kojic acid peel: what to expect before and after

Kojic acid affects pigment production in the skin and may be used as part of a brightening plan. Before treatment, the clinician may check for active irritation, infection, recent sun exposure, or a history of troublesome reactions. The strength, contact time, and surrounding products influence how much redness or shedding occurs.

Afterward, mild tightness, warmth, flaking, or temporary redness can occur. Dark marks do not disappear at once; the treated area may look uneven while the outer skin settles. A peel cannot remove the underlying trigger of pigmentation, so sun exposure, inflammation, or hormonal changes can affect the result.

Give the clinician a full list of skincare products, medicines, recent procedures, and allergies. Follow their instructions about retinoids, exfoliating acids, waxing, and shaving. Use gentle cleansing, avoid picking flakes, and apply the recommended moisturiser. Protect the area from sunlight with shade, clothing, and sunscreen suitable for your skin.

Do not add scrubs, fragranced products, or several brightening ingredients while the skin is recovering. Restart active products only when the treating professional says the barrier has settled. Take progress photographs in similar lighting if you want to compare changes without judging the skin day by day.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for spreading swelling, intense pain, blistering, pus, fever, or redness that continues to worsen. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or widespread blistering. New or worsening darkening also deserves review because irritation can deepen pigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones.
