Kojic Acid for Oily Skin
Short answer
Kojic acid can target dark marks in oily skin, but it does not control oil itself and should be introduced without irritating the skin.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Targets
- Excess pigment, not facial oil
- Routine goal
- Control shine while protecting the skin barrier
What oily skin changes
Oily skin produces more sebum, which can contribute to shine, blocked pores, and blemishes. When a blemish heals, inflammation may leave a brown or grey mark. Kojic acid is aimed at that excess pigment rather than at sebum production, clogged pores, or active acne.
A lightweight product may feel more comfortable than a heavy cream, but texture alone does not determine suitability. Irritation from over-cleansing, scrubs, or several active ingredients can prolong marks and make the complexion look uneven.
A balanced approach
Cleanse gently, apply the kojic acid product as directed to dry skin, and follow with a non-comedogenic moisturiser. Start on a limited area and use it on a modest schedule until you know how your skin responds. Keep separate from other strong actives unless a clinician has planned the combination.
Use daytime sun protection because ultraviolet exposure can deepen leftover marks. Kojic acid will not replace acne treatment; persistent blackheads, inflamed spots, or painful nodules need a plan aimed at those problems. Stop if burning, marked redness, swelling, or peeling develops. See [Kojic Acid](/materials/kojic-acid/) and [Skin Brightening Treatment](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/skin-brightening-treatment/) for related information.
When to get help
Seek dermatology advice for painful deep spots, scarring, widespread irritation, or dark marks that continue appearing despite controlling breakouts. A changing pigmented lesion, bleeding spot, or persistent crust should be examined rather than treated as an acne mark.
Questions to bring
Ask whether the marks are post-inflammatory pigmentation, which acne treatment should come first, whether your product may clog pores, and how to fit kojic acid around cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection.

Questions people ask
Does kojic acid make oily skin less oily?
No. It targets pigment formation and is not an oil-control treatment.
Can I use it on active pimples?
It is generally used for marks rather than inflamed pimples; ask a clinician about treatment for active acne.
