Does kojic acid exfoliate?
Short answer
Kojic acid is mainly a pigment-targeting ingredient, not a traditional exfoliant, so any exfoliating effect may come from other ingredients in the formula.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Kojic acid versus exfoliation
Chemical exfoliants loosen connections between surface skin cells or otherwise speed their shedding. Kojic acid is better known for reducing activity in melanin production, which is why it appears in products for dark spots and uneven tone. A product can contain kojic acid alongside acids, retinoids, enzymes, or scrubbing particles, so the full ingredient list matters.
Dryness, peeling, or tingling does not automatically mean the ingredient is working. Those signs may reflect irritation, especially if the skin feels tight, burns, or becomes red. Irritation can leave darker marks after inflammation, so more frequent application is not a shortcut to clearer tone.
How to use a formula carefully
Read the label and identify every active ingredient before combining products. Apply to intact skin as directed, moisturise regularly, and use sun protection on exposed areas. Avoid scrubs and several strong actives at the same time until your tolerance is clear.
Pause the product if you develop burning, persistent redness, cracking, or a rash. A dermatologist can identify whether your concern is excess pigment, congestion, or a skin condition and can choose an appropriate approach. When to seek care
Obtain urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, or severe blistering. Seek a dermatology review for painful peeling, a rash that persists after stopping, or a dark spot that changes in shape, colour, or texture.

Questions people ask

Can kojic acid cause peeling?
It can irritate some skin, but peeling is not proof of a beneficial effect and warrants a gentler routine.
