What should you know about kocher shoulder reduction?

Reduction means returning the upper arm bone to the shoulder socket. Before choosing a method, the clinician assesses the arm's circulation, sensation, and movement and considers whether a fracture or soft-tissue injury is present. Pain, muscle spasm, the direction of dislocation, and previous shoulder problems can affect the plan.

The Kocher name describes a specific sequence of arm positioning. It is not automatically appropriate for every dislocation, and forceful attempts can injure bone, nerves, blood vessels, or the joint lining. Clinicians may choose another approach, pain control, or specialist support instead.

Treat a suspected dislocation as an urgent injury. Keep the arm supported in its most comfortable position, remove rings if swelling is beginning, and avoid trying to push the joint back. Do not eat or drink while waiting for assessment in case sedation or a procedure is required. After reduction, use the prescribed support and begin physiotherapy only when instructed.

Get emergency help for a shoulder that looks out of place, sudden severe pain, or inability to move the arm. Call urgently if the hand is cold, pale, blue, numb, weak, or difficult to move. Persistent or increasing pain after the shoulder has been repositioned may indicate an associated injury and needs review.
