Short answer

Knee to ankle swelling can reflect injury or fluid collecting through the lower leg, so its timing and associated symptoms guide next steps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the swelling may mean

Swelling that begins after a twist, fall, or impact may involve a sprain, fracture, or irritated joint. An ankle sprain can cause swelling that spreads around the ankle and lower leg as fluid moves through nearby tissues. Ankle arthritis may cause stiffness and swelling that builds with activity. Gout can produce a suddenly hot, red, tender joint. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Note whether one leg is affected, whether the skin is warm or discoloured, and whether the swelling leaves a dent after gentle pressure.

Ankle swelling is the symptom to describe clearly: mention where it started, how quickly it appeared, and whether knee or ankle movement is limited.

What you can do now

Reduce activities that increase swelling and elevate the leg when resting. Use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if the swelling followed a minor injury, and avoid placing it directly on skin. Keep gentle movement within comfort if there is no suspected fracture, but do not force a painful joint or massage a newly swollen area. Arrange a clinical assessment if swelling persists, returns, or makes walking difficult; an examination may determine whether imaging or another test is needed.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for severe pain, an obvious deformity, inability to bear weight, rapidly increasing swelling, or a foot that becomes cold, pale, numb, or weak. Prompt assessment is also needed when one leg is swollen with warmth or redness, especially if breathlessness or chest pain occurs. These warning signs need assessment because circulation, infection, or a significant injury may require timely treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could the swelling be coming from the knee, ankle, or both? Do I need an X-ray or another scan? Which activities and pain-relief measures are suitable for me? What changes should make me return sooner?

Questions people ask

Can a knee problem cause ankle swelling?

Yes. Fluid and inflammation can extend through nearby tissues, although the ankle itself may also be injured or inflamed.

Should I walk with swelling from the knee to the ankle?

Only within comfort and if there is no deformity or suspected fracture; worsening pain or difficulty bearing weight warrants assessment.
