What Should You Know About a Knee That Is Swollen and Warm?

Short answer
A swollen, warm knee may reflect injury or inflammation and sometimes needs prompt medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Warmth can occur when extra fluid and increased blood flow accompany irritation inside or around the joint. A recent twist, fall, sports movement, or blow may point toward a ligament, meniscus, or other soft-tissue injury. Gout can present with sudden warmth, swelling, and marked tenderness. Infection is less common but important to assess quickly, especially when warmth is accompanied by fever or feeling unwell.
What a warm, swollen knee can mean
The swelling may be fluid inside the joint, often called an effusion, or puffiness in a nearby bursa. Knee bursitis can present with localized swelling and warmth over the kneecap or another pressure point. A Baker's Cyst can cause fullness behind the knee. Knee Osteoarthritis may cause swelling and stiffness that build after activity, while an ACL Tear or Meniscus Tear may follow a specific injury and affect stability or movement.
The pattern matters: sudden onset, inability to bear weight, a locked knee, a visible deformity, fever, or rapidly increasing redness changes how urgently you should be examined. A clinician may compare both knees, assess movement and stability, and decide whether imaging or Joint Aspiration is appropriate.
What you can do now
Reduce activities that increase pain and avoid running, jumping, kneeling, or repeated deep bending for now. Rest the leg in a comfortable position, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods, and elevate the knee when sitting or lying down. Do not place ice directly on skin or forcefully massage a hot, swollen joint.
If you can walk safely, gentle movement within a comfortable range can help prevent stiffness; stop if pain or swelling increases. Do not start leftover antibiotics or drain the knee yourself. A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose pain relief safely if you have kidney disease, stomach ulcers, take blood thinners, are pregnant, or have other medical conditions.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care today if the knee is hot and very painful, redness is spreading, you have fever or chills, you feel generally unwell, or you cannot bear weight or move the knee normally. These features can occur with infection or a significant injury and should not be judged by home treatment alone.
Arrange an appointment soon if swelling persists, returns, follows an injury, causes giving way or locking, or limits work, sleep, or walking. Seek emergency help for severe pain with a pale or cold foot, new numbness or weakness, or marked swelling of the calf with breathlessness or chest pain.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be causing the warmth and whether the fluid appears to be inside the joint or in a bursa. You can also ask whether you need an examination for ligament or meniscus injury, blood tests, imaging, or fluid testing; which activities are safe; and what symptoms should prompt urgent reassessment.

Questions people ask
Can a warm, swollen knee be caused by gout?
Yes. Gout can present with sudden joint warmth, swelling, and intense tenderness, but an examination is needed because infection and injury can look similar.
Should you put heat on a swollen knee?
Cold applied through cloth may be more comfortable during a new swelling episode. Avoid direct ice and stop any application that irritates your skin.
When is a swollen knee an emergency?
Get urgent care for a hot, very painful knee with fever or feeling unwell, inability to bear weight, rapidly spreading redness, or severe symptoms affecting the leg or breathing.
