Knee swelling out of nowhere: what it can mean

A swollen knee may contain extra fluid within the joint or have puffiness in nearby tissue. Gout can inflame a joint through crystal deposits, while knee bursitis affects a fluid-filled cushion near the knee. A Baker's Cyst can create fullness behind the knee. Knee osteoarthritis may flare without one memorable event, and a meniscus tear or ACL tear can sometimes follow a twist that seemed minor at the time. The symptom alone cannot identify one condition; notice whether the knee is hot, stiff, locked, or difficult to bear weight on.

Reduce activities that increase pain, rest with the leg supported, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Gentle movement within comfort can help prevent stiffness, but do not force a swollen or locked knee. Record when the swelling began, whether it changed quickly, and any recent sport, kneeling, long travel, illness, or medication change. A clinician may examine the joint and decide whether imaging or Joint Aspiration is useful.

Seek urgent medical assessment if swelling comes with fever, marked warmth or redness, severe pain, sudden inability to stand, a deformed knee, new numbness, or a calf that is painful and swollen. Arrange a timely appointment when swelling persists, returns, limits sleep or walking, or the knee catches or gives way. These features need assessment because infection, bleeding, or internal joint damage can require prompt treatment.

Ask: Is the fluid inside the joint or around it? What findings point toward gout, bursitis, a Baker's Cyst, or an internal tear? Would an examination, X-ray, or fluid sample clarify the cause? Which activities should I pause, and what symptoms should make me seek urgent help?
