What should you know about knee gave way now painful?

Short answer
A knee that gives way and becomes painful should be protected and assessed if pain, instability or loss of movement persists.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Stop the provoking activity and protect the knee
- Track
- Twisting, popping, swelling and repeated buckling
- Urgent sign
- Deformity, locking or inability to bear weight
What it means
Giving way can happen when pain briefly inhibits the muscles, or when a ligament, meniscus, kneecap or joint surface is not controlling movement normally. A twist or sports injury can affect the ACL or Meniscus Tear; front-of-knee symptoms can occur with Chondromalacia Patellae or Patellar Tendinitis. Knee Osteoarthritis, Knee Bursitis, Baker's Cyst and Gout are other conditions that can present with knee pain or altered movement. The episode does not identify a diagnosis by itself.
What to do now
Stop the activity that triggered the episode and use support on stairs or uneven ground. Rest from running, jumping and twisting, apply a wrapped cold pack if sore, and move within a comfortable range without forcing the joint. Do not drive if you cannot brake safely. Arrange assessment when pain or buckling continues, because an examination can check stability, movement and strength.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care if the knee is visibly deformed, locked, rapidly swelling, unable to bear weight, or accompanied by severe pain, numbness or a cold foot. Prompt review is also needed for fever with a hot, red knee. Even a single episode deserves clinical advice when it followed a forceful twist, a pop, or a fall.
Questions for your doctor
Tell your doctor what your foot was doing, whether you heard a pop, how quickly pain appeared, and whether swelling followed. Ask whether you need imaging, activity restrictions, or a rehabilitation plan to restore controlled movement.

Questions people ask
Should you walk on a painful knee that gave way?
Limit walking to what is necessary and use support if needed; seek assessment if weight-bearing is difficult or symptoms persist.
Does one buckling episode prove a ligament tear?
No. Buckling has several possible explanations, so the episode and examination are needed to identify the cause.
