What should you know about knee and groin pain linked?

Short answer
Knee and groin pain can share a hip or movement-related source, so assessing the hip as well as the knee helps guide treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common clue
- Groin pain with limited hip rotation or pain during turning.
- Assessment
- The hip, knee, gait, and surrounding muscles may all need examination.
Why both areas may hurt
The hip can refer pain toward the groin and sometimes the front or inside of the knee. Hip impingement may cause groin discomfort with bending or turning, while a hip labral tear may produce catching, clicking, or pain during pivoting. Hip osteoarthritis can bring stiffness, reduced hip rotation, and aching that spreads down the leg. Muscles around the groin and thigh may also become overloaded when the knee is painful or movement is uneven.
A useful history includes the exact pain path, hip stiffness, clicking, giving way, recent sport or lifting, and whether stairs, sitting, or turning changes symptoms. The knee may be pain-free on examination even when the hip is involved.
What to do next
Temporarily reduce deep squats, pivoting, sprinting, and movements that reproduce groin pain. Keep gentle walking and comfortable hip and knee movement, but stop before sharp pain. Avoid repeatedly testing a click or forcing the hip into a stretch. Sports physiotherapy can examine hip, knee, trunk, and walking mechanics and build a staged exercise plan. Arrange a medical assessment when symptoms persist, limit sleep or walking, or began after a fall.
When care is urgent
Seek urgent care after a significant injury if you cannot bear weight, the leg looks shortened or rotated, or pain is severe. Prompt review is needed for fever with a hot, swollen joint, rapidly worsening pain, new weakness or numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Emergency help is appropriate for sudden severe pain with faintness or marked illness.
Questions to bring
Ask whether the hip could be referring pain to the knee, which examination or scan is appropriate, which activities to pause, and what rehabilitation milestones should guide your return to sport.

Questions people ask
Can a hip problem cause knee pain without much hip pain?
Yes. Hip-related pain may be felt mainly in the groin or knee, so the hip should be checked when knee symptoms do not fully explain the pattern.
Should I keep exercising with linked pain?
Choose gentle, comfortable movement and pause deep bending, pivoting, or sprinting until the cause and safe loading plan are clear.
