Klatskin-Type Cholangiocarcinoma Explained

The liver makes bile, and bile travels through branching ducts into the intestine. A Klatskin-type tumour starts around the point where the main branches leave the liver. Its position may cause bile to back up, leading to jaundice, itching, dark urine, light-coloured stools or upper-abdominal discomfort. Cholangitis, an infection in obstructed bile ducts, may cause fever, chills and pain.

A care team may order liver blood tests and imaging such as CT or MRI-based studies to map the ducts and check nearby structures. The team may also assess general health, liver function and whether the tumour has spread. A diagnosis and treatment plan should be explained in terms of your own scans rather than the name alone.

Ask for a coordinated review by specialists in hepatobiliary surgery, oncology, radiology and gastroenterology. Before an appointment, write down the onset of jaundice or itching, any fever, and all medicines or supplements. If the duct is blocked, endoscopic or image-guided drainage may relieve obstruction and allow the team to stabilise bile flow.

Some tumours may be considered for complex surgery involving the bile ducts and liver. Other plans use chemotherapy, targeted therapy or supportive procedures, depending on spread, tissue findings, fitness for treatment and tumour characteristics. Treatment decisions can change as imaging or laboratory information becomes available.

Contact urgent medical services for fever or shaking chills with jaundice, new severe abdominal pain, confusion, marked drowsiness, persistent vomiting or rapidly worsening yellowing.
