What should you know about kinesiology strapping tape?

Short answer
Kinesiology strapping tape can offer a movement cue and light external support, but it cannot diagnose or repair an underlying injury.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding strapping tape
Despite the word strapping, kinesiology tape is designed to move with the skin and joint. A clinician may place it along a muscle or across a joint to influence body awareness during walking, exercise, or everyday activity. The result differs between people and depends on the condition, application, and other parts of care. It should not be confused with a rigid brace that limits motion.
Using it safely
Ask a physiotherapist to demonstrate the application rather than copying a pattern without checking the reason for it. Apply only to intact skin, avoid pulling the tape tightly around a limb, and keep the edges smooth. Remove it when the planned period ends or sooner if the skin becomes sore, hot, itchy, blistered, or unusually pale. Continue prescribed strengthening or mobility work.
When care is needed
Seek assessment when pain is new after an injury, interferes with sleep or function, or comes with persistent swelling, giving way, weakness, or restricted movement. Get urgent help for a deformity, inability to bear weight, severe sudden pain, or numbness with a cold or discoloured limb.
Questions for your clinician
Ask what the tape is intended to change, how to test your skin first, how to remove it, and which exercises should accompany it.

Questions people ask
Is kinesiology strapping tape the same as a rigid bandage?
No. Kinesiology tape is flexible and usually allows movement; rigid support is selected when limiting motion is the clinical goal.
Can I tape over a wound?
No. Wait until the skin is healed and ask a clinician if you have a rash, allergy, fragile skin, or reduced sensation.
