What should you know about kinesio tape back of knee?

Short answer

Kinesio tape behind the knee may alter sensory feedback during movement, but it should not hide swelling or delay assessment of a serious problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What tape behind the knee can mean

The hollow behind the knee contains important blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and soft tissue. Tape placed around this area may give a light sensory cue and can sometimes make bending or straightening feel more comfortable. It does not stabilise every knee problem and cannot identify whether pain comes from the joint, hamstring tendons, calf muscles, or another source.

A physiotherapist should consider the pattern of pain, swelling, movement, and activity before choosing a tape layout. A new lump, fullness, or tight swelling behind the knee deserves assessment rather than repeated taping.

Safer steps

Use clean, dry, intact skin and avoid wrapping tape tightly around the back of the knee. Do not cover a wound, rash, or unexplained lump. Check your toes and lower leg after application for new tingling, numbness, colour change, or swelling. Remove the tape if symptoms increase or the skin becomes irritated.

Keep the knee moving within the range advised by your clinician, but do not use tape to push through sharp pain. The material is explained in Kinesiology Tape, and application by a trained professional is described in Kinesiology Taping.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical assessment for sudden calf or knee swelling, warmth, redness, severe tenderness, or pain that appears without a clear injury. Get urgent help for breathlessness or chest pain with leg symptoms. After an injury, urgent review is appropriate if the knee looks deformed, cannot bear weight, or becomes locked.

Questions to ask

What is causing the pain behind my knee? Is there swelling that tape could conceal? Where should the tape stop, and what signs mean I should remove it? Which exercises can restore comfortable bending and straightening?
