How to treat nail fungus safely

Fungal nail infection can make a nail yellow, white, brown, thick, brittle, crumbly, or partly separated from the nail bed. These changes can also come from injury, psoriasis, or other nail conditions, so discoloured nails should not automatically be treated as fungus. Even when fungus is confirmed, improvement follows new nail growth rather than an instant colour change. Athlete’s foot can coexist and may re-infect the nail if it is left untreated.

A clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment for selected infections, while oral antifungal treatment can be considered when infection is more extensive or topical care is unlikely to reach it. Medication choice should account for other medicines, liver health, pregnancy, and the nail involved. Laser treatment for nail fungus is another option to discuss, but suitability varies. Keep nails short and dry, do not share clippers, disinfect tools, and wear breathable footwear. Removing damaged nail material or nail surgery is reserved for selected cases.

Arrange assessment if a nail changes without a clear injury, several nails become affected, or the skin around a nail is painful or swollen. Seek prompt care for pus, spreading redness, fever, or a dark streak that is new or changing. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced immunity, or significant foot problems should obtain medical advice early rather than self-treating for a long period.
