How to manage Demodex mites

Demodex are tiny mites associated with hair follicles and oil glands, especially on the face and around the eyelashes. Many people have them without symptoms. When the mite load or the skin response becomes troublesome, you may notice facial redness, rough bumps, burning, flaky skin, or irritated eyelid margins. The appearance can overlap with rosacea and other conditions, so a clinician may examine the skin or eyelashes before choosing treatment.

Wash the face gently, avoid scrubbing, and pause fragranced products that sting. Keep cosmetics and eye products clean, and avoid sharing towels, pillowcases, or makeup. A clinician may recommend a prescription cream, cleanser, or eyelid-directed treatment; medicated shampoo treatment may be considered when the scalp or hair-bearing skin is involved. Use products exactly as directed, particularly near the eyes, and attend a review if redness or scaling continues.

Arrange medical advice for persistent facial redness, worsening bumps, recurring eyelid irritation, crusting at the lashes, or symptoms that affect vision. Seek prompt care for eye pain, marked swelling, light sensitivity, or a sudden change in sight. Do not apply insecticide, essential oils, or strong steroid products near the eyes without professional direction.
