Can kidney stones cause cloudy urine?

Urine can look cloudy when it contains crystals, mucus, blood cells or inflammatory material. A stone can irritate the urinary tract and cause blood or mineral particles to appear. Concentrated urine from dehydration may also look darker or less clear.

Cloudiness with painful urination, a strong new smell, frequent urges, fever or flank pain raises concern about infection as well as a stone. Other causes are possible, so do not diagnose yourself from colour or clarity. A urine test is more useful than appearance alone.

Notice whether the cloudiness persists, and record any pain, fever, urinary frequency or change in urine amount. Drink fluids normally if you can and have not been given a restriction, but do not force fluids if you are vomiting or struggling to pass urine.

Arrange a GP consultation if cloudy urine continues, recurs, or occurs with stone symptoms. The clinician may request a urine sample and blood tests, and may consider an abdominal ultrasound to assess the kidneys and urinary drainage. Take prescribed medicines as directed and avoid using antibiotics left from an earlier illness.

Seek urgent care for cloudy urine with fever or chills, significant flank or abdominal pain, vomiting, visible blood, new confusion, or difficulty passing urine. These combinations can indicate infection or obstruction. Prompt assessment is also sensible when urine output falls noticeably, even without dramatic pain.

Ask whether you need urine culture or imaging, whether the urine findings suggest a stone or infection, which fluid amount is appropriate, and which symptoms should trigger same-day or emergency care.
