Kidney stones and pancreatic cancer: what to know

Kidney stones form in the urinary system and can cause sharp pain in the side or back, pain that travels toward the groin, nausea, or blood in the urine. Pancreatic cancer begins in the pancreas, which lies behind the stomach. It may present with persistent upper-abdominal or back discomfort, jaundice, digestive changes, or Loss of Appetite. These patterns can overlap with many non-cancer conditions, so symptoms need context rather than self-diagnosis.

A kidney stone does not turn into pancreatic cancer. A clinician may use examination, blood tests, urine tests, and imaging to identify the cause of pain and decide whether the pancreas, kidneys, or another organ needs closer assessment.

Seek an appointment for persistent pain, unexplained weight loss, yellowing of the skin or eyes, ongoing vomiting, or a sustained change in appetite or digestion. Bring a list of medicines and describe the location, timing, and triggers of pain. If pancreatic cancer is found, a specialist team may discuss surgery such as the Whipple Procedure, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, or symptom-focused Palliative Care. The choice depends on the tumour and your health.

Get urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening side or abdominal pain, fever with urinary symptoms, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, confusion, or very little urine. Yellow skin with severe abdominal pain or fever also needs prompt assessment. These signs can reflect obstruction, infection, dehydration, or another urgent problem; they do not establish a cancer diagnosis.

Ask: Does the pain pattern fit a stone, pancreatic problem, or another cause? Which urine, blood, or imaging tests do I need? What warning signs should bring me back urgently? If a pancreatic tumour is suspected, what is the next diagnostic step? Would treatment options such as Chemotherapy, surgery, or Palliative Care be relevant?
