KFBIO digital pathology: what to know

After a biopsy or operation, tissue is prepared on glass slides. A scanner can create a high-resolution digital image that a trained pathologist reviews on a screen. The pathologist examines cell shape, tissue arrangement, and other features, then connects the findings with the clinical history and other tests.

Digital images can make it easier to share a case with another specialist, compare areas on a slide, and discuss findings with a multidisciplinary team. Software may help highlight or measure features, but the clinical interpretation remains part of specialist pathology review. A digital image does not replace the original diagnosis or the wider clinical context.

Ask whether the sample has been scanned, whether the pathologist has reviewed the whole case, and whether additional stains or molecular tests are needed. Keep copies of the pathology report, imaging reports, and treatment history when seeking another review.

If the diagnosis or treatment plan feels unclear, ask how the digital findings affect the diagnosis, tumour type, grade, margins, or treatment choices. A Second Opinion may be useful when the diagnosis is complex or a major treatment decision depends on pathology.

Digital pathology itself is a laboratory process and does not usually cause symptoms. Contact the treating team promptly if you develop worsening pain, bleeding, fever, wound redness, or other problems after the biopsy or operation that provided the tissue. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe breathlessness, collapse, or rapidly worsening illness.

Ask who reviewed the slide, whether the scan was technically adequate, what the report confirms or leaves uncertain, whether more tests could change treatment, how the digital file will be shared securely, and whether the original slides remain available for review.
