What should you know about keyhole microdiscectomy?

Short answer

Keyhole microdiscectomy removes a small portion of herniated disc through a limited incision to relieve pressure on a spinal nerve.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main target
A disc fragment pressing on a spinal nerve
Typical focus
Leg pain and other nerve-related symptoms
Recovery approach
Gradual activity with follow-up guidance

What the procedure means

A disc between the spinal bones can bulge or rupture and irritate a nearby nerve. This may cause sciatica, tingling, numbness or radiating leg pain. During microdiscectomy, the surgeon uses magnification and specialised instruments through a small opening to reach the affected area and remove the fragment that is contacting the nerve. The disc is not usually removed in its entirety. A surgical microscope may improve the view of delicate structures.

The operation is considered when symptoms persist despite appropriate non-surgical care, or when nerve pressure is causing concerning weakness. Suitability depends on examination findings and imaging that match the symptoms.

How to prepare and recover

Before surgery, share your medicines, allergies, previous operations and any change in bladder, bowel or leg function. Follow the team’s instructions about fasting, bathing and medicines. Afterward, gentle movement is commonly encouraged, while bending, twisting and heavy lifting are reintroduced according to the surgeon’s plan. A gradual physiotherapy programme can rebuild movement confidence and trunk strength. Keep the wound clean and attend the planned review.

When to seek urgent help

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain or new weakness. Seek urgent assessment for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or rapidly progressing weakness. These symptoms need timely evaluation because they can signal serious nerve compression or another postoperative problem.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which disc level is involved, what symptom the operation is expected to improve, and what alternatives fit your findings. Clarify the movement and lifting limits, wound-care instructions, driving guidance, work plan and signs that should trigger a call.

Questions people ask

Is keyhole microdiscectomy the same as microdiscectomy?

Keyhole microdiscectomy generally describes a limited-access technique for performing a microdiscectomy; the exact instruments and incision vary by surgeon and case.

Will physiotherapy be needed afterward?

Some people benefit from guided physiotherapy to restore movement, strength and safe lifting habits, based on symptoms and the surgeon’s advice.
