What should you know about kettlebell diastasis recti?

Short answer
Kettlebell exercise may be possible with diastasis recti, but technique, load, breathing, and symptom control need individual attention.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What diastasis recti means
Diastasis recti is widening and thinning of the connective tissue between the two sides of the abdominal muscles. It can occur after pregnancy and may show as a ridge or doming along the midline when you sit up or lift. The gap itself is less useful than how well the abdominal wall manages pressure and movement.
A kettlebell swing, clean, snatch, or heavy carry can increase pressure inside the abdomen. That does not automatically make the exercise unsuitable, but breath-holding, straining, visible doming, back discomfort, or pelvic heaviness suggests that the current load or technique needs changing.
How to approach kettlebell training
Begin with a movement you can control, a light load, and a stable stance. Exhale during the effort instead of holding your breath, keep the ribcage stacked over the pelvis, and avoid forcing the abdomen outward. Reduce the range, repetitions, speed, or weight if you notice doming, leaking, pain, or pressure.
A pelvic health or postnatal physiotherapist can observe your breathing and lifting pattern, then build a graded programme around your goals. See [Postnatal Physiotherapy](/treatments/pelvic-floor-and-rehabilitation/postnatal-physiotherapy/) for related support.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if abdominal separation is accompanied by persistent abdominal or back pain, a bulge that is painful or difficult to reduce, urinary or bowel control changes, or pelvic pressure during exercise. Stop the session and seek urgent care for severe sudden pain, vomiting with a tender bulge, faintness, or heavy bleeding.
Questions for your clinician
Ask: Which kettlebell movements suit my current control? How should I breathe during a swing or lift? What signs mean I should reduce the load? Could my symptoms reflect a hernia or pelvic floor problem rather than diastasis alone?

Questions people ask
Can kettlebells make diastasis recti worse?
They may aggravate symptoms when the load or technique exceeds your current control. Doming, pain, leaking, or pelvic heaviness are reasons to modify the exercise.
Should I avoid all abdominal exercise?
Usually, a graded approach is more helpful than avoiding every abdominal movement. Choose exercises that you can perform without pain, breath-holding, or excessive pressure.
