A comparison may show fewer visible plugs, a softer surface or less redness, but photographs do not capture itch, sensitivity or how consistently aftercare was followed. Lighting, camera angle and skin hydration can also change how bumps appear. Keratosis pilaris may fluctuate, so a smoother period does not mean the follicles can never become rough again.

Tell the clinician about eczema, recent tanning, active rashes, shaving, waxing and products that have irritated you. Follow the specific preparation advice for a peel, topical prescription or device-based treatment. Afterward, cleanse gently, moisturise as directed and protect exposed skin from sun. Do not pick flakes or add several exfoliants at once. If a retinoid or acid is prescribed, use the planned frequency rather than increasing it to chase faster visible change. Keep notes or photographs in similar lighting so progress is easier to judge.

Mild tightness, dryness or temporary redness can occur with some treatments, but contact the treating clinician if discomfort is severe, swelling is increasing, blisters develop, skin becomes very tender, or dark or light patches appear and persist. A new cluster of pus-filled bumps may need assessment for folliculitis rather than routine keratosis pilaris care.
