Keratosis Pilaris (Reibeisenhaut): What It Means

Reibeisenhaut literally evokes a rasp-like skin texture and is used to describe the feel of keratosis pilaris. Keratin collects at the opening of hair follicles, creating tiny bumps most often noticed on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks.

The condition is not the same as an ingrown hair, although shaving and friction can cause separate bumps in the same area. Dryness may make the texture more obvious. Picking can inflame follicles and leave marks that last beyond the original roughness.

Use lukewarm water, a mild cleanser and a moisturiser after bathing. Emollient therapy can soften dry surface scale. Avoid forceful rubbing, rough brushes and squeezing. If basic care is not enough, a dermatologist may recommend a carefully chosen exfoliating product or topical retinoid.

For persistent concerns, ask whether a chemical peel or laser hair removal has a defined role for your particular pattern. Procedures should be planned around skin sensitivity, active irritation and the difference between follicle plugs and unwanted hair.

Have the skin assessed if it becomes painful, hot, swollen, crusted or pus-filled, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Prompt care is appropriate for rapidly spreading redness or fever. A new one-sided patch, severe itch or sudden change also deserves a clinician's view rather than self-treatment alone.
