Before treatment, a clinician should identify whether the visible concern is follicular roughness, redness, unwanted hair, ingrown hairs, or a combination. Laser hair removal targets hair follicles and is not the same as a treatment designed to smooth keratin plugs. After treatment, skin may look temporarily red or feel warm. Any improvement varies with the target, skin characteristics, device, and treatment plan. A photograph cannot predict another person's response or replace an examination.

Tell the practitioner about recent tanning, pigment changes, medicines, active rashes, cold sores, and previous reactions to light-based procedures. Follow instructions about shaving and avoiding irritating products. After a session, use gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and sun protection as advised. Do not pick at crusts or use strong exfoliation on tender skin. A clinician may combine laser hair removal with emollient therapy or consider a topical retinoid for texture; a chemical peel is another option only when the skin is suitable.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if redness spreads, pain increases, blisters form, the area becomes markedly swollen, or the skin develops a striking light or dark patch. Fever or pus needs medical assessment. Pause further sessions until the reaction and the original diagnosis have been reviewed.
