Kerasal Nail Psoriasis: What to Know

Nail psoriasis may cause small pits, ridges, crumbling, thickening, separation from the nail bed, or yellow-white discolouration. It can affect fingernails, toenails, or both, and skin or joint symptoms may be present or absent. A discoloured nail is not automatically psoriasis: fungal infection, trauma, eczema, and other nail disorders can look similar. The nail grows slowly, so visible improvement can lag behind control of the inflammation.

Keep nails trimmed without cutting into the surrounding skin, file rough edges gently, and wear gloves for prolonged wet work or household chemicals. Avoid biting, scraping beneath the nail, aggressive manicures, and picking at lifted nail material. Record which nails changed and whether there is joint stiffness, tenderness, or skin scaling. A dermatologist may discuss topical care, steroid injection into the skin for selected nail involvement, or biologic therapy when disease is extensive or linked with other psoriasis.

Seek assessment for a new persistent nail change, especially if several nails are involved or the nail is lifting, painful, or crumbling. Prompt care is sensible for redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, or sudden dark discoloration after an injury. A clinician may examine the nail and test for infection before choosing treatment, since the wrong approach can delay improvement.
