Keflex for strep throat: what to know

Strep throat is caused by bacteria, while many sore throats are caused by viruses and will not improve with antibiotics. A clinician may use your symptoms, throat examination, and testing when available to decide whether treatment is appropriate. Keflex belongs to the cephalosporin group. It does not provide instant pain relief and does not treat a viral cold. Tell the prescriber about previous reactions to cephalexin, penicillins, or other antibiotics, as well as kidney problems and medicines you take. Fever, sore throat, and swollen glands can occur with strep throat but do not confirm it alone.

Take Keflex exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber tells you to stop. Follow the label about timing, liquid storage, and missed doses; do not double a dose without advice. Fluids, soft foods, rest, and suitable pain relief can ease throat discomfort. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use someone else’s supply. If symptoms are not beginning to settle or they return after treatment, arrange a review rather than starting another course yourself.

Get urgent help for swelling of the lips or face, wheezing, faintness, or widespread hives after a dose. Seek prompt care for severe or persistent diarrhoea, dehydration, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, muffled speech, one-sided throat swelling, or breathing difficulty. A very unwell person with fever needs medical assessment.
