What should you know about keep getting bartholin cysts?

Recurring Bartholin cysts can result from repeated blockage of a gland near the vaginal opening and may need examination to plan lasting relief. A cyst may be painless, while an infected collection can become a tender abscess that makes sitting or walking difficult.

The Bartholin glands produce fluid near the vaginal entrance. If the duct becomes blocked, fluid can collect and form a cyst. When bacteria enter the trapped fluid, swelling, warmth, redness and pus may develop. A cyst that has drained can return if the opening closes again. A new lump near the vaginal opening is not automatically a Bartholin cyst, so age, location and examination findings guide the diagnosis. Vulval Pain may occur when a cyst is inflamed or infected.

Arrange a medical review when cysts recur, grow, interfere with movement or become painful. Warm water soaks may ease discomfort for some people, but do not squeeze, pierce or drain the lump yourself. A clinician may recommend drainage and a procedure that helps keep the opening available. Seek same-day care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, difficulty sitting or walking, or feeling generally unwell. Emergency help is needed if you feel faint or confused. A lump that persists, is firm or appears later in life needs prompt examination rather than repeated self-treatment.

Ask whether the lump is a cyst or abscess, why it may be recurring, whether a sample or drainage is needed, and which procedure would reduce the chance of another blockage.
