What should you know about keep burping and stomach pain?

Swallowed air may cause pressure and discomfort, while acid reflux can cause upper abdominal or chest burning. Gastritis may irritate the stomach lining. Food poisoning and gastroenteritis often produce cramps with vomiting or diarrhoea. Gallstones may cause pain under the right ribs, particularly after meals. Coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease and diverticular disease can cause abdominal pain with bowel changes, though symptoms vary. Burping and pain together do not point to one diagnosis.

Eat slowly, avoid fizzy drinks and keep meals modest while symptoms settle. Drink fluids and note the pain’s exact location, whether it follows food, and any fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation or blood. Avoid medicines that irritate your stomach unless a clinician has advised them. Arrange an assessment if the symptom keeps returning or affects eating and daily activities.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, black stools, fainting, breathing difficulty or yellow skin. Prompt review is also needed for persistent pain, fever, dehydration, progressive weakness or unexplained weight loss.

Explain when the pain began, where it sits, how it behaves after meals and whether bowel or urinary symptoms occur. Ask whether examination, blood tests, stool tests or imaging may be useful.
