What should you know about keeler standard otoscope?

The device combines a handle, light source, viewing optics and a small disposable or reusable speculum. The speculum sits at the entrance of the ear canal while the clinician looks for wax, swelling, redness, discharge, a foreign object or changes to the eardrum. Findings are interpreted alongside pain, hearing changes, fever and other symptoms; the instrument itself does not provide a diagnosis.

During an ear examination, sit still and tell the clinician if the ear is tender. Do not put cotton buds, oils or other objects into the canal beforehand. A clinician may examine both ears and may use the otoscope during a GP or child health consultation. Follow the advice given if wax, infection or an eardrum problem is suspected.

Arrange medical advice for new hearing loss, persistent ear pain, fluid or blood from the ear, marked dizziness, an object in the canal or symptoms after an injury. Seek urgent care for severe symptoms, sudden hearing loss or a serious head injury, especially when vomiting, confusion or weakness is also present.

Ask what was seen in the canal and behind the eardrum, whether wax or infection explains the symptoms, whether hearing should be checked, and which warning signs should prompt another assessment.
