What should you know about a Keeler practitioner otoscope?

The instrument combines a handle and otoscope head with a speculum that enters only a short distance into the ear canal. Focused light helps the clinician assess the canal lining and eardrum, including colour, surface changes, discharge, wax, or a possible foreign body. Findings are considered alongside pain, hearing, fever, balance symptoms, and the rest of the examination; the view alone is not a complete diagnosis.

Before the appointment, note the timing of pain, hearing changes, discharge, recent swimming, injuries, and anything placed in the ear. Keep the canal undisturbed. During the examination, relax your jaw, keep your head steady, and report tenderness. A practitioner may use a different size speculum or stop if the canal is too sore. Follow-up can be arranged through a GP consultation or, for a child, a child health consultation.

Arrange prompt review for ongoing ear pain, reduced hearing, discharge, bleeding, or troublesome dizziness. Seek urgent help for sudden hearing loss, facial weakness, swelling behind the ear, severe headache with fever, or confusion.
