What should you know about a Karl Storz otoscope?

During an ear examination, the clinician gently positions the instrument at the entrance of the ear canal and directs light inside. Depending on the model and attachments, the view can be enlarged or displayed for teaching and discussion. The examination may show wax, redness, swelling, fluid, a foreign object or changes to the eardrum.

The instrument itself does not identify the cause of every ear symptom. Ear pain can arise from infection, pressure, skin irritation, jaw problems or referred pain. A clear view can also be limited by wax, tenderness or a narrow canal.

Tell the clinician about pain, discharge, reduced hearing, ringing, dizziness, recent swimming, injury and anything placed in the ear. Do not insert cotton buds, hairpins or drops unless advised, because these can irritate the canal or obscure the view. Children may feel more comfortable when a caregiver explains that the examination is brief and they need to keep their head still.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, swelling behind the ear, a significant injury, or blood or clear fluid after a head injury. Arrange a GP consultation for persistent pain, discharge, fever, worsening hearing or a blocked sensation. A child with severe pain, unusual sleepiness or difficulty responding should be assessed promptly.

Ask what was visible, whether wax or infection is present, and whether hearing should be tested. For a child, ask about safe pain relief, follow-up timing and whether a child health consultation or specialist review is needed.
