What should you know about just a sore throat?

Short answer
Just a sore throat is commonly caused by irritation or infection, and the accompanying symptoms determine how urgently it needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Breathing or swallowing difficulty
What may be behind it
A sore throat can occur with a [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/), [Influenza](/conditions/influenza/), or [COVID-19](/conditions/covid-19/), often alongside cough, runny nose, fever, or tiredness. [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/) can irritate the throat through drainage from the nose.
A [Strep Throat](/conditions/strep-throat/) infection may cause marked throat pain, fever, swollen neck glands, and pain when swallowing without the usual cold symptoms. [Tonsillitis](/conditions/tonsillitis/) can cause enlarged or coated tonsils. Reflux can irritate the throat, particularly with hoarseness or a sour taste. A symptom pattern is informative but does not replace an examination.
Comfort measures
Sip fluids, choose soft foods, and rest your voice. Warm drinks, cool drinks, or throat lozenges may soothe irritation; avoid anything that worsens discomfort. Gargling with warm salt water may help adults who can do so safely, but children should not swallow the solution.
Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief, especially if you are pregnant, have kidney or stomach problems, or take other medicines. Antibiotics are useful for selected bacterial infections, not for every sore throat.
When to seek care
Get urgent help if you cannot breathe, swallow fluids, or handle saliva, or if your voice becomes muffled with rapidly worsening throat swelling. Seek prompt assessment for severe one-sided pain, difficulty opening the mouth, dehydration, or a widespread rash.
Arrange a clinical review if pain is severe, keeps returning, lasts longer than expected, or is accompanied by persistent fever, swollen glands, or unusual exhaustion. A child who is drooling, refusing fluids, or becoming very sleepy needs prompt care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you need a throat examination or swab, which pain relief fits your health history, whether reflux or allergy may contribute, and which warning signs should change your plan.
