What should you know about joint pain and itchy skin?

Atopic dermatitis, asteatotic eczema, contact dermatitis, hives, scabies, and skin yeast infection can cause itching, but joint pain may be unrelated. Psoriasis can affect the skin and may occur alongside inflammatory joint symptoms; lichen planus is another condition that can cause itchy skin changes. A medicine or infection can also produce a rash with general aches.

Describe whether the joints are swollen, warm, stiff in the morning, or limited in movement. Record where the itch began, whether it is worse at night, and whether anyone close to you is itchy. These details help a clinician decide whether dermatology, primary care, or another assessment is appropriate.

Use a bland moisturiser on dry skin, keep showers lukewarm, and avoid fragranced products or scratching. Rest a painful joint, but maintain gentle movement if it does not worsen pain. Note new medicines, foods, products, travel, illness, and insect or household contacts.

Do not assume the itch explains the joint pain or use leftover prescription creams. Arrange an appointment when symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with sleep or movement; bring a list of medicines and photographs of changing skin.

Seek urgent care for a hot, very swollen joint with fever, rapidly spreading rash, facial swelling, breathing trouble, purple or blistering skin, severe weakness, or inability to use the joint. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for new joint swelling with persistent scaly plaques or repeated hives.
