What should you know about Johnson skin rash?

A rash can be red, scaly, raised, blistered, cracked, or ring-shaped, and itching is common. Atopic dermatitis often causes dry, itchy inflammation; contact dermatitis follows exposure to an irritant or allergen. Heat rash may appear after sweating, while intertrigo affects skin folds. Psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, and a drug rash can resemble other rashes but require different management.

The timing matters. Note when the rash began, where it started, whether it is spreading, and any new soap, food, plant, medicine, or close contact. A clinician may need to examine the skin rather than relying on a photograph.

Keep the area cool and gently clean, pat it dry, and avoid scratching or newly scented products. Do not apply several medicated creams at once, because this can irritate the skin or hide useful clues. Photograph changes in similar lighting and list recent medicines and products for the appointment.

If a medicine may be involved, contact the prescriber or pharmacist promptly for specific advice before changing a prescribed treatment. Avoid sharing towels or clothing when an infection is possible.

Get urgent care for a rash with trouble breathing, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, extensive blistering, skin peeling, painful raw skin, eye involvement, mouth sores, or fever and marked illness. Arrange prompt assessment if the rash is rapidly spreading, infected-looking, or not settling after you remove a suspected irritant.
