Jock itch with raw skin: what to know

A fungal infection can cause itching and scaling in the groin, while rubbing and scratching remove some of the skin's protective barrier. Sweat trapped in a fold may then sting the irritated surface. Rawness can also come from chafing, allergic or irritant dermatitis, yeast, or a bacterial infection, so it is not specific to jock itch. Broken skin deserves more care because products may sting and germs can enter damaged areas. A clinician may use the distribution, border, scaling, and surrounding skin to help identify the cause.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser if needed, then pat dry. Wear loose clothing and breathable underwear, and change after sweating. Avoid scratching, scrubbing, deodorant, perfume, and hair removal over raw skin. If an antifungal is recommended, apply only to clean, dry external skin and follow the product instructions; stop and seek advice if irritation becomes severe. Do not apply steroid cream alone to a suspected fungal rash unless prescribed. Keep towels and clothing separate from others until the cause is clear.

Seek prompt medical care if raw skin is increasingly painful, warm, swollen, bleeding, producing pus, or accompanied by fever. Medical advice is also appropriate for rapidly spreading redness, deep cracks, genital sores, or difficulty passing urine. Arrange a review when symptoms persist, recur, or fail to improve with directed antifungal care, because raw skin may indicate a different diagnosis or a secondary infection.

Ask whether the skin barrier is broken, which cleanser or medicine is suitable, how to reduce friction while healing, and whether testing is needed if the appearance is atypical.
