Jock itch in the pubic area: what to know

Jock itch, also called tinea cruris, often affects the groin crease and nearby inner thigh. The skin may feel itchy, burning, scaly, or tender, and the affected area can have a clearer centre with a more noticeable edge. The pubic skin may be involved, but the penis, vulva, and scrotum are less typical sites for classic jock itch. Other conditions, including irritation from sweat, contact dermatitis, yeast, or some skin diseases, can look similar. Itchy groin symptoms do not identify the cause by themselves.

Keep the area clean and thoroughly dry, change out of damp clothing promptly, and choose loose breathable underwear. Avoid sharing towels, washcloths, or clothing. An antifungal cream may be appropriate when the appearance fits a fungal infection; use it exactly as directed and continue for the recommended course even if the itch settles early. Avoid steroid cream alone unless a clinician advises it, because it can disguise or worsen a fungal infection. A clinician can recommend a different approach when the infection is extensive or has not improved with topical care.

Arrange a medical assessment if the rash is painful, rapidly spreading, oozing, cracked, or associated with fever. Seek prompt advice for sores, blisters, discharge, marked swelling, or symptoms involving the genitals. An examination is also sensible when there is no visible improvement after using an appropriate antifungal as directed, when the problem keeps returning, or when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Ask whether the appearance supports jock itch or another cause, whether the genital skin is involved, how long treatment should continue, and whether household or sports-contact measures are needed to reduce spread.
