Jock itch on a private part: what to know

Jock itch is tinea cruris, a fungal infection of the groin folds and adjacent upper thighs. It may produce itch, scale, burning, and a rash with a clearer center or more active outer edge. Sweat and tight clothing can worsen discomfort. A rash limited to the penis, scrotum, vulva, or mucosal skin is not typical enough to label from symptoms alone. Soap irritation, eczema, yeast, bacterial infection, and sexually transmitted infections can look similar. A private examination can protect your privacy while clarifying which treatment is suitable.

Use lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, then dry by patting. Wear clean, loose underwear and change it after exercise or sweating. Keep personal towels separate and avoid scratching. A topical antifungal may help confirmed or strongly suspected jock itch on external groin skin; follow the label and stop if it causes a marked reaction. Never insert a skin cream into a body opening unless it was prescribed for that purpose. If the affected area is extensive or does not respond, an oral antifungal may be considered after assessment.

Get prompt medical attention for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, swelling, pus, ulcers, blisters, or difficulty urinating. Arrange a private-area assessment for discharge, a new rash after sexual contact, or symptoms involving internal genital skin. A routine review is appropriate when symptoms persist, recur, or fail to improve with correctly used antifungal care. Avoid fragranced sprays and harsh antiseptics while the skin is inflamed.
