Jock itch on the body: what to know

Jock itch is the common name for tinea cruris, a fungal infection that favors the groin creases and upper inner thighs. Heat, dampness, and rubbing can make those areas easier for fungus to colonize. If similar rings or scaly patches appear on the trunk, arms, or other body sites, the condition may be another form of ringworm or a non-fungal rash rather than jock itch. A spreading edge, scale, itch, and a relatively clearer center can suggest a fungal pattern, but these signs are not enough to diagnose it. A clinician can examine all affected areas together.

Keep the groin and other affected areas clean and dry. Change sweaty clothing, avoid sharing towels, and wash garments that touch the rash. Use a topical antifungal only when the product is appropriate for the site and follow its instructions. Apply it to the surrounding affected skin as directed rather than treating only the most itchy spot. Do not use a steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash. If several body areas are involved, the rash covers a large region, or topical care is impractical, a clinician may discuss oral antifungal treatment.

Seek care promptly if the rash is painful, hot, swollen, draining, rapidly spreading, or accompanied by fever. Arrange review if the face, scalp, nails, or genitals are involved, if the skin is broken, or if treatment has not helped after correct use. People with diabetes or reduced immune defenses should get individualized advice rather than repeatedly self-treating. Bring a list of products already used to the appointment.
