Jock itch in a private area: what to know

Jock itch, or tinea cruris, typically affects the creases where the thigh meets the body and may extend across the upper inner thighs. It can look red, brown, or gray-brown on different skin tones, with scale or a defined advancing edge. Itching and burning are common. The vulva, penis, and scrotum can be irritated by many conditions, including contact reactions, eczema, yeast, and sexually transmitted infections; jock itch is not the only explanation for symptoms in a private area. A clinician can examine discreetly and recommend testing when the pattern calls for it.

Rinse or wash gently, avoid fragranced products, and pat the groin folds dry. Choose loose, breathable underwear and change it after sweating. Keep towels and clothing personal, and wash them regularly. If a clinician or product label supports a topical antifungal, apply it only to the external skin and follow the directions; do not place a product inside the vagina, urethra, or anus unless specifically prescribed for that use. A clinician may choose oral antifungal treatment for selected cases.

Arrange prompt care for genital swelling, severe pain, ulcers, blisters, pus, fever, or pain when urinating. Seek an assessment for unusual discharge, symptoms after sexual contact, or a rash that involves mucosal surfaces. Arrange routine review if treatment does not help, the rash returns, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Avoid sexual contact that causes pain or skin-to-skin irritation until you have advice.
