What should you know about JK plaster of Paris?

When mixed with water, plaster of Paris forms a soft paste that can be shaped around a limb. It hardens into a supportive cast, often over padding and a stockinette layer. A cast can limit movement, protect a fracture and help maintain alignment while a clinician monitors healing. It may be used for fracture casting or for carefully staged treatment such as clubfoot casting.

Keep the cast dry unless your care team gives different instructions. Do not insert objects inside it to scratch the skin, trim its edges or alter its shape. Elevating a newly injured limb can reduce swelling, and gently moving uncovered fingers or toes helps maintain comfortable movement. Contact the treating service promptly if the cast becomes wet, cracked, loose, tight or develops a sharp edge. Seek urgent care for worsening pain, severe swelling, blue or pale fingers or toes, new numbness, inability to move exposed digits, fever, drainage or a bad smell.
