Jim Carrey and ADHD: what can be said?

ADHD is assessed through a person's own history, symptoms, functioning and developmental pattern. Difficulty concentrating, irritability or feeling anxious can happen with ADHD, but they can also arise from poor sleep, stress, depression, medication effects or other health conditions. A successful career or visible creativity does not rule ADHD in or out. A story about a celebrity may encourage someone to seek information, but it cannot establish a diagnosis.

Write down when concentration problems began, where they occur, and how they affect work, relationships, organisation and daily tasks. Ask someone who knew you earlier in life about longstanding patterns if that feels appropriate. Book a mental health assessment with a qualified clinician. Bring medication details, sleep concerns and relevant school or work history. Avoid borrowing stimulants or changing treatment without supervision.

Arrange an assessment when attention difficulties repeatedly disrupt responsibilities or relationships, or when anxiety and irritability are hard to manage. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, severe agitation, hallucinations, chest pain or dangerous lack of sleep. Sudden changes in concentration need prompt medical review because they may have a cause other than ADHD.

Ask which symptoms support or argue against ADHD, what other explanations should be checked, and what an assessment involves. Discuss therapy, practical strategies and medicines only after the diagnosis and risks have been reviewed.
