Jewelry for nickel allergy: what to know

Nickel allergy is a contact allergy. The immune system reacts after skin contact with nickel, often beneath a ring, watch, bracelet, necklace clasp or earring. The area may itch, burn, become dry, swell or develop small blisters. A reaction can appear after repeated exposure, even if a piece of jewelry was previously tolerated. Sweat, friction and skin damage can increase contact with the metal.

Stop wearing the suspected item until the skin settles, and wash the area gently with lukewarm water. Avoid scratching, fragranced products and tight coverings. Choose jewelry clearly labelled nickel-free or made from a material recommended by a clinician; plated surfaces can wear down and reveal an irritating metal. Arrange medical advice if the rash keeps returning, spreads beyond the contact area, becomes painful, cracks, or produces discharge.
