Jet lag and no sleep: what should you know?

Short answer
Jet lag can temporarily prevent sleep because your body clock is still set to your previous time zone. Use the local schedule, seek daylight at the right time, keep naps short, and avoid driving when sleepy. Symptoms usually settle as your body clock adjusts, but persistent or severe sleep loss needs medical advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main cause
- Your body clock is temporarily out of step with local time.
- Common effects
- Difficulty sleeping, daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, and headache.
- Safety reminder
- Avoid driving or hazardous tasks when sleep loss affects alertness.
What jet lag and no sleep mean
Crossing time zones quickly separates your internal sleep–wake rhythm from the clock at your destination. You may feel alert at bedtime, wake too early, or sleep lightly and wake repeatedly. Daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, irritability, and headache can occur alongside difficulty sleeping. Travel stress, an unfamiliar room, noise, dehydration, alcohol, and caffeine can add to the problem.
Jet lag is different from ongoing insomnia, although a disrupted trip can expose or worsen an existing sleep problem. The direction and number of time zones crossed, your usual routine, and the timing of light and sleep all affect adjustment. Feeling tired does not make it safe to drive or operate equipment if your attention is reduced.
What you can do
Adopt destination time soon after arrival: eat, sleep, and get up according to local time. Spend time outdoors during the local day, while keeping evening light lower when you are preparing for bed. Keep the bedroom cool, dark, and quiet, and use a calm wind-down routine such as reading or gentle breathing.
If you nap, make it brief and early enough that it does not replace the coming night’s sleep. Drink water, eat regular light meals, and avoid alcohol near bedtime. Limit caffeine to the earlier part of the local day. Do not start sleeping tablets, melatonin, or other remedies without checking whether they suit your health, other medicines, and travel plans.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if sleep remains severely disrupted after you have had time to adjust, keeps returning after travel, or is affecting work, mood, concentration, or safe daily activities. Arrange advice sooner if you have a condition or medicine that can be affected by sleep loss, or if you are considering a sleep aid.
Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, new confusion, or a sudden severe headache. Get prompt medical advice for extreme agitation, unusually elevated mood with very little need for sleep, or thoughts of harming yourself. Do not drive while drowsy.
Questions for your doctor
You could ask: Could another condition or medicine be contributing to my sleeplessness? What sleep and light schedule fits the direction of my journey? Is a sleep aid appropriate for me, and how should it be timed? What symptoms should prompt an urgent review?

Questions people ask
How can I sleep after arriving in a new time zone?
Follow local bedtime and wake time, use daylight during the local day, keep the room dark and quiet, and avoid late caffeine, alcohol, and long naps.
Should I take melatonin or sleeping tablets for jet lag?
Ask a clinician or pharmacist first. Timing, interactions, health conditions, and next-day drowsiness can affect whether a product is suitable.
When is jet lag more than a temporary travel problem?
Seek medical advice when severe sleep loss persists, repeatedly returns, or interferes with mood, concentration, work, or safety.
