What should you know about a JedMed otoscope?

The device has a handle, light, viewing system, and a small disposable or cleanable speculum that sits at the ear opening. During an examination, the clinician may look for wax, swelling, irritation, fluid, discharge, a foreign object, or changes to the eardrum. The view is one part of an assessment: symptoms, hearing, pain, temperature, and the history of recent infections or injury also matter. An otoscope does not by itself identify every cause of ear pain or hearing change.

Tell the clinician when symptoms started, whether one or both ears are affected, and whether you have discharge, fever, dizziness, reduced hearing, or recent swimming or air travel. Do not push cotton buds or other objects into the canal. A clinician may gently adjust the outer ear to improve the view; tell them if this causes pain. Children may need a calm child health consultation so the examination can be adapted to their age and comfort.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness with difficulty walking, an object stuck in the ear, bleeding after an injury, or severe pain with swelling behind the ear. Arrange a GP consultation for persistent pain, discharge, fever, blocked hearing, or symptoms that are worsening. Do not use ear drops unless a clinician or pharmacist has confirmed they are suitable, particularly if the eardrum may be damaged.
