What should you know about jaw, throat and ear pain?

Pain when swallowing, a hoarse voice or swollen tonsils gives different information from pain mainly triggered by chewing or jaw movement.

Tonsillitis may produce a sore throat with pain felt in the ear, especially when swallowing. A common cold or sinusitis can inflame the upper airway and create pressure around the face and ear. Middle-ear infection may cause earache, fever or reduced hearing. Earwax buildup more often causes blockage or muffled hearing than throat pain.

Jaw muscles can become sore after clenching, grinding or prolonged chewing, and that discomfort may spread toward the ear or temple. Because these areas are close together, a physical examination is more reliable than trying to identify the source from pain location alone.

Sip fluids, rest your voice and choose soft foods if swallowing or chewing hurts. A warm compress may soothe the jaw or neck. Use only pain medicine that is safe with your medical history and follow its label. Avoid smoking and do not place objects in the ear. Antibiotic treatment should follow an examination because throat and ear symptoms can have causes that do not respond to antibiotics.

Book a medical review for persistent or worsening pain, fever, ear discharge, hearing loss, repeated episodes or difficulty opening the mouth. Seek urgent care if you cannot swallow saliva, have trouble breathing, develop rapidly worsening one-sided throat or neck swelling, or feel severely unwell. Children with ear or throat pain may need assessment sooner when drinking becomes difficult.

Ask which area appears to be the source, whether your ears and tonsils need examination, and whether jaw clenching could be contributing. You can also ask which symptoms should lead to urgent review and whether a follow-up is needed if pain does not settle.
