Jaw Osteomyelitis Treatment: What to Know

Osteomyelitis means infection has reached bone. In the jaw, it may follow a tooth infection, gum disease, an extraction, an injury or reduced local blood supply. A clinician may examine your mouth and face, review symptoms, and arrange imaging or samples when needed. The plan depends on the infection’s location, its extent, your dental health and other medical conditions.

Antimicrobial treatment is selected and timed by the treating clinician. Dental treatment may include addressing an infected tooth or improving drainage. If dead bone, an abscess or a persistent focus remains, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon may discuss debridement. Bone grafting can be considered later in selected cases when infection control leaves a structural defect.

Arrange prompt care with a dentist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon or doctor, especially if pain, swelling, discharge or fever is progressing. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and do not stop it early without advice. Keep the mouth clean using the care instructions provided, choose foods that are easier to chew, avoid smoking, and report new numbness or difficulty opening the mouth.

Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing facial or neck swelling, confusion, severe weakness, uncontrolled bleeding, or inability to take fluids. Same-day assessment is sensible for fever with worsening jaw pain, pus, a foul taste, or swelling after dental treatment.
